Local history & identity
Carneys Point traces its municipal history to Upper Penns Neck Township, formed in 1721 and incorporated in 1798. Penns Grove was formed as a borough from part of the township in 1894. Upper Penns Neck was renamed Carneys Point Township in 1976.
The area's industrial story is closely connected to the Delaware River and the DuPont-era manufacturing complex, while Penns Grove developed as its own compact borough and commercial center. Today the two communities remain closely linked through the regional school district, local roads and the 08069 postal area.
